$32 million will fund the development of coal waste mineral extraction technology.
The Department of Energy (DOE) announced that $32 million is being distributed to projects dedicated to researching rare earth mineral extraction from coal waste. Many clean energy technologies require rare earth elements and specific minerals like cobalt and lithium for their production and function. At the moment, the United States relies on imports of these necessary materials for clean energy manufacturing and current global production of these minerals has not kept pace with the rising global demand.
“President Biden’s Investing in America agenda is providing a historic opportunity to convert coal products into the critical materials needed to build an array of clean energy products,” said Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm. “The President’s transformative investments will strengthen our national security by lessening our dependence on international supply chains, while delivering high-quality jobs and healthier communities for all Americans.”
